You can communicate with other users via direct messages, post status updates in your feed, and mention users in both. Mentioned users receive a notification.
Send direct messages
- 1Go to Messages from the navigation menu
- 2Select an existing conversation or start a new one by finding the user (e.g. from Discover or their profile)
- 3On a user's profile, click Send message to open the chat
- 4Type your message in the text box (up to 5000 characters)
- 5Press Send or Enter to send
Messages are delivered in real time. You can see when the other user has read them.
Post status updates
Status updates are short posts that appear in the feed of people who follow you.
- 1On the Home page (feed), you'll see the text box at the top: What's on your mind?
- 2Type your status (max 500 characters)
- 3Click Publish
You can edit or delete your last status from the same box. Status updates support mentions just like messages.
Mention users
You can mention other users in messages, status updates and comments. The mentioned person receives a notification.
- 1Type @ (at sign) in the text box
- 2Start typing the user's name or alias
- 3A list of suggestions with matching users will appear
- 4Select the user from the list (click or use keyboard)
- 5The mention will be inserted as @name. Continue typing and send as usual
Where you can mention
- Direct messages – In chat with any user
- Status updates – In the feed publish box
- Comments – In comments on posts, news or status updates
The mention must come after a space or at the start of the text. If you type a space after the @, the user search closes.
